Lukla is the cliff-side Sherpa town built around Tenzing-Hillary Airport — Nepal's famous Everest trailhead where most Khumbu treks begin after a weather-dependent flight from Kathmandu or seasonal Ramechhap hubs.
History of Lukla
Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla opened in 1964 under the supervision of Sir Edmund Hillary's Himalayan Trust, replacing multi-day walks from Jiri as the main Khumbu entry. The short uphill runway and dramatic approach made Lukla synonymous with Everest region adventure.

Transportation
Domestic flight Kathmandu–Lukla (~30–40 min when operating). Seasonal Ramechhap (Manthali)–Lukla flights require a Kathmandu–Ramechhap road leg (~4–5 hours) when CAAN directs ops away from Kathmandu. No practical tourist bus route.
