Jomsom is a windy high-desert town on the Kali Gandaki — Nepal's best-known mountain airstrip outside the Everest region. Most visitors pause here for acclimatization, Thakali meals and logistics before Muktinath, Marpha or trek exits. Strong afternoon winds are normal; the compact bazaar, apple country nearby and dramatic valley walls define the experience.
History of Jomsom
Jomsom grew as the administrative and trading centre of Lower Mustang where the Kali Gandaki valley widens enough for an airstrip and bazaar. Thakali merchants historically controlled salt and grain trade along the corridor. Today it serves Muktinath pilgrims, Annapurna Circuit trekkers and as the main air gateway before Upper Mustang.

Best time to visit

Bus or fly Kathmandu–Pokhara, then Pokhara–Jomsom flight (~20 min when open) or long jeep via Beni–Tatopani (often 10–14 hours from Pokhara, longer from Kathmandu).
